After graduating with a degree in economics from Princeton, Owen went on to get a law degree and a post doctorate in tax from New York University. He has clerked for the United States Tax Court in Washington, D.C., and has been published by the Florida Bar Journal. He is a member in good standing with both the Florida and Georgia Bar.
